Golden Year Search Launched
The

Filipinos or the “The Outstanding Young Men” Awards was formally
launched during the 3rd Regular National Board meeting
held at the Fleuris Hotel in Puerto Princesa City in Palawan last
July 12, 2008. In a simple launching program signals that the search
for this year’s TOYM Awards commenced the nomination process. Now

the Junior Chamber International Philippines, an affiliate of the
Junior Chamber International (JCI), a worldwide federation of young
leaders and entrepreneurs with over 200,000 JCI members and millions
of JCI alumni.
Celebrating its golden anniversary this year, the Outstanding Young
Men (TOYM) Awards has grown to be the country’s most coveted
recognition for young Filipinos aged 18 to 40. The TOYM Awards have
been a yearly undertaking of the Jaycees since 1959. The Gerry Roxas
Foundation, Inc. has been a co-sponsor of the awards since 1972 and
the TOYM Foundation which was established in 1990 to ensure the high
standards that the awards have always been known for.
Over the years, the TOYM has become an institution, having developed
a reputation for its selectiveness of outstanding young men and
women upon whom the award is conferred. TOYM seeks to give national
recognition to young Filipino men and women whose selfless
dedication to their profession or vocation has resulted in
significant contributions to the welfare of their countrymen and our
country at large, as well as to the advancement of their respective

the nation totaling 408 by now, is literally a Philippine “Who’s

An Urgent Message from the National President
JCI Sen. Raphael A. Lesaca
National President
Greetings brothers and sisters
in JCI!
I am writing this message as an urgent appeal to obtain help and
assistance for the people left devastated by the ravages of typhoon
Frank. I call on all our JCI brethren’s local chapters and
their families to initiate emergent help and relief efforts and/or
participate in ongoing projects involved in the aid and assistance
to typhoon victims.
I pray to our good Lord that you have been spared the ordeal of
being submerged in flood waters, injured by the gusts of wind, or
God forbid, lost a loved one. If you are fortunate to have been left
unscathed by typhoon Frank, YOU, dear friend, can help us help these
people. In a heartbeat, I am certain that YOU genuinely understand
the appropriate response of a true JCI member in crises situations
like these.
At the initiative of our NSG Fulbert Woo with The Iloilo Fire
Brigade Volunteers, JCI Iloilo and the 5 NEVPs; as instigated by
NEVP Louie Basilio of the Metro Area, help and relief networks have
been set up to extend emergency help to the affected areas that were
left incapacitated by typhoon Frank. Food, clothing and medicines
are gravely needed to be deployed to badly hit areas like Antique,
Iloilo, Capiz, Bacolod, Romblon, Mindoro, Batangas, Metro Manila,
Bulacan and Pangasinan
I
encourage all JCI Chapters and Chapter Presidents to take swift,
responsive and organized action to do whatever they can to help. It
goes without saying that our leadership, organizational and crisis
management skills will be put to best use while we commit ourselves
to reaching out and lend a hand to our brethren in this time of
great need.
I have instructed the National Office to assist, in whatever way
humanly possible, the various chapters who will undertake help and
relief efforts in the days and weeks to come. As a more organized
and concerted effort will be formed in the coming days, I will
disseminate information in due course.
I have
utmost faith and trust that the JCI membership will rise to the
occasion and help our countrymen prevail in these most trying times.
I remain.

undertaking of the organization in observing the tradition of
recognizing the academic and leadership excellence of the thousands

archipelago. The organization thru its various local
chapters nationwide in cooperation with the Department of

JCI Philippines Young Leaders Program
From left : NP Rip Lesaca, Prof. Roger Davis,
Ms. Lavinia Penaverde (YLP Chairperson) and Ms. Misako Nozu of
Hitotsubashi University of Japan during their meeting at JCI
Philippines Secretariat last March 6, 2008.
It was year 2002
when the JCI Philippines has opened talks with the Japan Information
and Cultural Center
from the Japanese Government which agreed our organization to
participate in its prestigious “Young Leaders’ Program (YLP). Since
then every year JCI Philippines has been sending a representative to
avail said scholarship program.
The “Young Leaders’
Program” (YLP) is a prominent student scholarship program totally
funded by the Japanese Government (Monbukagakusho: Ministry of
Education, Culture, Sports, Science and Technology), which aims to
contribute to the fostering of future national leaders in Asia and
other countries. While deepening the participants’ understanding
about Japan, it also helps form a network among national leaders,
contributing to the establishment of friendly relationships and
improved policy planning between Asia and other countries.
The program
essentially offers scholarships to foreign students who wish to
study in the prestigious Hitotsubashi Unversity, Graduate School of
International Corporate Strategy as YLP students in business
administration annually under the Japanese Government Program. As
applicants from more than 14 countries are vying for a maximum of 15
slots in the program, needless to say, interested parties will be
undergoing a highly competitive screening procedure. With this program,
JCI Philippines is yearly opening this application to all the
members of chapters or LOMs in good standing who may be interested
to participate. Each LOM is
encouraged to nominate one (1) candidate. JCI Philippines will have
a paper screening of all application forms before these names are to
be submitted to the Japanese Embassy for final selection.
On it's 7th year there are
already several graduates on this program like, JG Puzon of JCI San
Juan, JCI Mem. Rommel Dumlao (JCI Surigao Nickel), JCI Mem. Lavi
Penaverde and JCI Mem. Marie Murillo (JCI Perlas Pasay), JCI Mem.
Joel Tabing (JCI Manila), JCI Mem. Raymar Padilla (JCI San
Juan).

World Congress in Antalya, Turkey

Cunanan with his fellow newly elected 2008 JCI Officers taking their
oath of office.
The JCI Philippines delegation led by
National President Glenn B. Santos are back from attending the
recently concluded 62nd t JCI World Congress in
Antalya, Turkey held last November 4-11, 2007. The affair was
attended by 3,108 JCI members from various corners of the world
coming from the 105 country members from the North and Latin Americas,
Africa and Middle East, Europe, Asia and the Pacific.
This year’s World Congress Chairman is JCI President Scott Greenlee
from JCI USA. The Congress was attended by JCI Officers as well as the
different National Presidents from national organizations accompanied
by the members of their respective delegations coming from the
different chapters around the world. Among the JCI dignitaries who
attended were some Past JCI World Presidents and prominent persons led
by JCI Sen. Taro Aso, who has been the former Foreign Minister of
Japan. Also in attendance is JCI Sen. Sonny Yu, JCI Foundation
Chairman with his wife Jennifer Yu, JCI President 1988 from Hong Kong
and 2003 ASPAC Senate President, Cecilio K. Pedro from the Philippines
among others.
This year JCI Philippines is fortunate enough so far that JCI Sen.
Dennis L. Cunanan, the 2005 National President has been elected as JCI
Vice President for next year ending the six year absence of JCI
Philippines to have a seat in the JCI Board. The last time the
organization to have a JCI officer was in year 2001 in the person of
2000 NP, JCI Sen. Rafael “Boydee” P. Dizon III. JCI Vice President
Dennis L. Cunanan will be assigned to the following national
organizations: Australia, French Polynesia, Indonesia, New Zealand,
Pacifc, and Taiwan.
Another
magnificent win which make the organization to be proud of this year
was the JCI Baguio "Sunflower" for winning the "Most Outstanding New
JCI Local Organization of the World" Award. This is the first time
that an all-female local organization in the Philippines has won this
recognition. Our last recipient of this award was the JCI Quezon City
"Katipunan" in year 2000. The said chapter was established last May
2005 with 25 pioneer members inducted last January 14, 2006 headed by
their Founding President, JCI Senator Dr. Ars Ngaosi-Mondiguing.
During their first year, JCI Baguio Sunflower (BSJ) conducted numerous
leadership trainings, business seminars and community outreach
projects as part of their social responsibility. They were also well
represented in national and international conventions.
The chapter is considered to be a “grand slam” winner this year for
winning the "Most Outstanding New Local Organization of the Year"
Award during the 2006 Area I Conference, JCI Philippines National
Convention (2006), JCI Asia-Pacific Conference in Chung-Li, Taiwan
(May 31 - June 3, 2007) besting 25 other countries and as the “Most
Outstanding New Local Organization of the World” during the said
congress where they competed with 9 other winners representing Europe,
North America, South America, Africa-Middle East and Asia- Pacific.
Said chapter was also conferred as the Most Outstanding Local
Organization of the Philippines (2007) and the most coveted “Best of
the Best Chapter” Award (2007) besting more than 50 other chapters
during the JCI Philippines National Convention held in Cebu last
October 2007
During the one week affair, JCI members converged to this annual
Congress where they discussed the Junior Chamber activities and the
affairs of the JCI organization represented their respective national
presidents as chief delegate from each country-affiliate who were
given the opportunity to report in meetings on the developments and
updates on the activities undertaken by their respective National
Organization (NOM) during the General Assemblies.
Delegates
were also given the opportunity to visit the trade shows, interact and
do business networking with their fellow foreign delegates. This time
they were also given the opportunity to attend the different seminars
offered by the JCI University as well as the other leadership
seminars. This is also to include the excellent fellowships hosted by
different countries during national parties. The Congress was indeed
an opportunity to explore and learn from fellow delegates how they are
living with JCI mission and how they can help people in their
respective communities. The 2008 JCI World Congress will be held in
New Delhi, India on November next year.
JCI University confers first
International Training Fellow from the JCI Philippines
The year 2008 represents a milestone in the JCI Philippines history,
not only because the organization is celebrating its 60th founding
anniversary, but the NOM’s latest feat that is producing --- for the
first time in the history of the organization--- its first ever
INTERNATIONAL TRAINING FELLOW (ITF) in the person of JCI Senator
REGINALD "Reggie" T. YU of JCI Manila. ITF is the highest honor
(the ultimate distinction) a TRAINER can ever receive from JCI
University. An ITF becomes part of JCI University’s design team
tasked in the formulation, design and development of future courses
of Junior Chamber International.
Since
the JCI certification system was introduced in 1990, many of our
outstanding Filipino trainers have attempted, but were unsuccessful,
in being conferred with this rank. Thus, while we had so many JCI
Prime graduates, only a handful ever get to become Local, National
and --- much less --- internationally-certified trainers. Therefore,
a Filipino reaching the highest rank of ITF represents a rare honor,
not only for his own local organization, but for our national
organization. More on trainings ...
